Music does bring people together. It allows us to experience the same emotions. People everywhere our politics or the expression of our love and our faith, music proves: We are the same.
John Denver
Few things in the world are as powerful as music.
When you think about it, it’s quite strange. A song is, after all, nothing more than a collection of notes strung together. Yet a simple tune can be joyful or it can be moving; it can stir up long-forgotten memories or it can, in difficult times, put a problem into perspective. Have you ever heard lyrics that seemed to reflect what you felt at the time and appeared to strike a chord within you? This blog was named in acknowledgement of the fact that singing (particularly loudly and out of tune, whilst you’re driving on the motorway) can be very liberating.
It’s been said that to enjoy music is to be able to go with the flow without clinging on to any particular note. There’s some deep wisdom there!
I’ve been thinking about what makes music so special and haven’t yet come up with a definite answer. One thing that’s clear is that it can reach the part of each of us that often gets buried under everyday cares and anxieties; it can speak to the part of us that’s raw and human.
